Here's the good news that makes hardness the friendliest water problem to pin down. Hardness is the one parameter where home testing is fully legitimate. Unlike bacteria or arsenic, you don't need a certified lab to get an actionable answer. Four rungs, cheapest first.
Rung 1 — free, for city readers: your water report. If you're on municipal water, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). It has a hardness line you can read today. Rung 2 — free, in your kitchen: the soap-shake test. Fill a clear bottle one-third with cold tap water, add about ten drops of pure liquid castile soap, cap it, and shake hard for ten seconds. Rich, stable suds with clear water beneath = soft. A flat, milky layer with scant, quickly-collapsing bubbles = hard. The one rule that makes or breaks this test: use real castile soap, never detergent, dish soap, or body wash — those are engineered to lather in hard water, so they'll happily foam up and give you a false "soft" reading. It's a screening test: it tells you direction (hard or soft), not degree.
Rung 3 — about $10: hardness strips. For an actual number in grains per gallon, dip a hardness test strip and match the color. The honest read on posture: at moderately hard (1–7 gpg), doing nothing is a completely reasonable choice — you'll see the occasional spot, but the economics don't scream for a system, and plenty of people live happily here with a bottle of vinegar under the sink.
